Testicular volume determination with the Orchiometer is a simple but important tool for pediatricians, endocrinologists, andrologists and all other physicians who assess male pubertal development or deal with fertility disorders.

Testicular size reflects the maturation state of the tubular apparatus and thus allows certain conclusions to be drawn about spermiogenesis. Specifically, testicular volume measurement can be useful in detecting the onset of puberty, both normal and delayed. Testicular volume measurement can also distinguish pubertas praecox from pseudopubertas praecox, in which the testis remains small.

Orchiometry is also of great value in infertility counseling. Normal spermiogenesis can only be expected if the testicular volume is at least 12 ml, while normal testosterone production can also be present in a testis that is too small. Thus, in many cases orchiometry can replace more intrusive and costly examinations (e.g. spermiogram, testicular biopsy, hormone analyses) or in other cases help to establish the indication for performing such measures.
