Frankincense is a resin extracted from the frankincense tree (Boswellia). In the plant genus belonging to the balsam tree family (Burseraceae), four different species are distinguished: Arabian frankincense (Boswellia sacra), Elemi frankincense (Boswellia fereana), Ethiopian frankincense (Boswellia papyrifera) and Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata). All species grow under similar climatic conditions on the border between deserts and mountainous regions in different parts of the world: around the Horn of Africa, in southern Arabia and in India.

Frankincense is obtained as white gum resin. Similar to the extraction of rubber, the bark of the trees is cut, and the resin that emerges is collected and dried. The classic incense, with its spicy, citrus scent was smoked in ancient times for protection, consecration and atmospheric purification.

Smoking olibanum is said to attract prosperity and wealth. When smoked, incense builds a bridge from the material to the spiritual world. Frankincense is used to scent rooms.
