Frankincense is a resin obtained from the frankincense tree (Boswellia). This genus, belonging to the Burseraceae family, comprises four distinct species: Arabian frankincense (Boswellia sacra), Elemi frankincense (Boswellia fereana), Ethiopian frankincense (Boswellia papyrifera), and Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata). All species grow under similar climatic conditions at the boundary between deserts and mountainous regions in various parts of the world: around the Horn of Africa, in southern Arabia, and in India.
Frankincense is obtained as a white gum resin. Similar to rubber harvesting, the bark of the trees is incised, and the oozing resin is collected and dried. Classic frankincense, with its spicy, citrusy fragrance, was burned in antiquity for protection, consecration, and atmospheric purification.
