Myrrh is the resin of the myrrh tree (Commiphora myrrha), which belongs to the balsam family and is related to frankincense. The name comes from the Semitic word *murr* (bitter). The myrrh tree grows primarily in Yemen, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Somalia. The resin is obtained by incising the bark. When the bark of the myrrh shrub is cut, liquid gum resin oozes out, which hardens upon exposure to air into irregular, reddish-yellow pieces.
Myrrh is used for room fragrance.
