For a reliable cytological assessment, the primary requirement is a sufficient quantity of representative and well-preserved cell material. All subsequent analytical steps, whether conventional or liquid-based (cell suspension-based cytologic) methods, build upon this prerequisite. A conventional Szalay Cyto spatula smear yields highly reliable results. When used correctly, a sufficient quantity of well-preserved and representative cell material is always obtained. This significantly reduces the number of false-negative smears.
